Ram Ashraya
About This Spot
Stepping into Ram Ashraya is like slipping into a cherished corner of old Mumbai, where time moves at a gentle, unhurried pace. Nestled amid the bustling lanes of Matunga East, this unassuming spot carries a quiet warmth—a simple, no-frills charm that draws you in with the comfort of familiar aromas and the soft hum of conversations and clinking plates.
The space feels lived-in and welcoming, grounding you in a sense of community that’s rare amidst the city’s frantic rhythm. The faint chalkboard menu on the wall hints at the timeless fare to come, while the friendly staff move swiftly, their ease reassuring even when the queue spills out the door. It’s a place where patience feels rewarded not just by the food, but by the gentle rhythm of the morning unfolding around you.
Here, the food is less about formal presentation and more about soul and tradition. Imagine plates arriving hot and fragrant, packed with the kind of South Indian comfort that lingers in memory—dosas with the perfect balance between crisp edges and tender folds, soft idlis that melt in your mouth, and subtle accouterments that bring layers of flavor, from tangy rasam to velvety sheera that surprises with hints of pineapple or black currant.
Their filter coffee is a gentle ritual—a bittersweet welcome that punctuates the meal and invites quiet reflection. It’s these small moments that anchor the experience, whether it’s the sweet aftertaste of a fresh meetha paan or the humble delight of a rasam vada arriving just as the morning sun reaches through the window.
Ram Ashraya is not about gloss or reinvention; it’s a steady, honest celebration of South Indian food and the unspoken connections formed over shared meals. It’s the kind of place where familiar flavors meet genuine smiles, and where waiting in line almost becomes part of the charm, a quiet nod to its place in the neighborhood’s heart.

Ram Ashray is such a lovely place for classic South Indian comfort food. The variety is impressive from soft Mysore Pak to delicious pineapple sheera, along with all the usual South Indian favourites from idlis, to dosa and i honestly loved their neer dosa it was so good perfectly cooked and satisfying. Everything feels fresh, authentic, and satisfying. The ambience is simple and old-school, adding to the charm, and the service is quick and efficient. A perfect spot for breakfast or a comforting meal anytime. They have paan as well as sweets and everything.

Best Dosa I’ve ever had! It was the perfect mix of soft and crispy! The alace is nice and clean. Staff is super friendly and helpful. I don’t know what was happening to the Chai. It tasted a bit weird to me - also to my Indian friends Nonetheless 5 stars. Definitely worth going and checking out!

Visited Ram Ashraya Dosa and tried several items from their menu. The restaurant is clearly popular, as evidenced by the long queue - expect to wait around 30-40 minutes during peak hours. What We Ordered: - Ramas Wada - Pineapple Sheera - Pudi Idli - Neer Dosa - Mysore Dosa Food Quality: The taste was authentic and lived up to expectations. Each dish had that genuine South Indian flavor that's hard to find elsewhere. The variety we tried showcased their range well, from the crispy dosas to the soft idlis and the sweet pineapple sheera. Overall Experience: The food quality definitely justifies the wait, but the long queue can be a deterrent during busy hours. I'd recommend visiting during off-peak hours for a more relaxed dining experience without compromising on the authentic taste. Verdict: Worth a visit for authentic South Indian cuisine, but plan your timing wisely to avoid the crowd!

OMG the pineapple sheera and upma combo is fire I love this place for some authentic south Indian comfort food. There will be a queue here almost every morning so be prepared to wait. They compensate for it with super fast service. Your food will be at your table within minutes of ordering. Try their thatt idli! When I didn't have the time to wait in the queue, my friends and I would just take a Thatt idli to-go and enjoy it by the roadside. It's so worth it! It's a busy place, expect to be rushed out after your meal If you have a sweet tooth, definitely try their desserts made fresh. This menus changes every week so definitely ask what's new in the kitchen.

This is one of the oldest and probably the best South Indian/Udupi restaurant one can visit in Mumbai. Still maintaining the old world charm with the menu on a black board inside the restaurant. The food is just awesome, no matter what you try along with fast and excellent service. The pineapple sheera, golli bhajji, mangalore buns, masala dosa, upma, rasam vada, filter coffee are a few items I would recommend. All items are easonably priced; Ambience is very basic and very inviting. It's a must visit for a south indian snacks lover. The place is quite huge but still always crowded, so be prepared to wait for a table in rush hours. Parking for 4 wheeler can be an issue but 2 wheeler can be parked just outside the restaurant.

Visited Ramashraya multiple times over the years, and every visit for everyone only strengthens the admiration for this legendary place. The food here is consistently outstanding — honestly, the taste is better than most South Indian restaurants even in the South itself! Every dish is served fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced in taste and texture. From the idlis and dosas to the upma and filter coffee, everything is up to the mark. The service is quick, the staff are polite, and the overall atmosphere reflects the charm of old-school Mumbai hospitality. Despite being busy almost all day, the place maintains excellent hygiene and efficiency. It’s one of those rare eateries that has truly stood the test of time — since 1939 — and continues to deliver authentic South Indian flavors with unmatched consistency. A must-visit landmark for anyone who appreciates quality, tradition, and genuine taste.

Amazing place to have south indian food items. For years they have maintained their taste. Their ghee podi dosa and filter kapi are unbeatable! All other food items like mysore masala, neer dosa which comes with sweet coconut saran are also good. Do not miss to try the buns! Staff are very active and service is good. Any time we went, there was always a waiting period of 10-15 mins so plan accordingly. But the line moves quickly. Overall, a very good place to have south indian items.
